How the planet loop was built
The first game ran on flat ribbons. For the second we wrapped every circuit round one small planet, so a race can end where the last one began.
One globe, twenty-four circuits
Each circuit is a path drawn on the same sphere. Drive far enough and you cross a road from another race, with its own weather still running.
- Six circuits on the night side
- Ten that cross the equator
- Eight polar loops for the patient
Four players, one screen
Splitting the screen in four meant drawing the planet four times. The answer was to draw far roads as plain lines and keep detail for what is close.
Try the debug view
Hold both shoulder buttons on the title screen and enter loop --wire to see the planet as the engine does.
