Writing and publishing

Part two of five. What happens between a blank box and a page on the web.

One box, one button

An entry is a title and some text. You type it into a plain box in your browser, and when you press Publish the front page, the entry's own page, the month's archive and the feed are all rebuilt for you.

Nothing is lost if you close the window: drafts are kept every minute, and a published entry can be edited for as long as the weblog exists.

What every weblog has

  • A permanent address for each entry, so others can link to it.
  • Archives by month and by category.
  • Comments, which you may hold for approval or switch off.
  • A feed that readers and other sites can follow.

For those who like to tinker

Every template is one HTML file and one stylesheet, and both are yours to edit. Put {entry.title} where the title should go and {entry.body} where the text should; the manual lists the other forty tags.
