Port Varen is a harbour town of slate roofs and fish smokers at the mouth of a tidal river. Come for the lighthouse walk and the Thursday market; stay for the ferry to the outer islands.
The Hollow Dunes lie two hours on foot from the last bus stop. There is no shop and no shade, and on a clear evening no better view on the coast.
A harbour town at the mouth of the Varen, the gateway to the outer islands.
Ferry timetable changes on 1 October. The last boat to the islands then leaves at 15:40. Update the times if you have a newer sheet.
Port Varen grew up around its fish quay and still lands a catch every morning. The old town is a tangle of lanes behind the harbour wall; everything a visitor wants is within fifteen minutes on foot of the clock tower. Timetables use the 24-hour clock, written like 15:40.
Trains from the Old Capital take about two hours and arrive at Varen Quay, right on the harbour. Buy a return; it costs little more than a single.
