Open for commissions

Hand-drawn maps for people who like getting lost.

On the drawing table

A walking map of a market town for its summer fair: forty stalls, three bandstands and a duck pond that insists on being in the middle.

Next free slot is in September.

  3. The island ferry map

The island ferry map

Seven piers, four boats and a timetable that only makes sense as a picture.

How it was drawn

The harbour office wanted one sheet a visitor could read on a windy pier. I rode every boat twice, once looking forward and once looking back.

What went on the sheet

Each pier gets its own colour and each boat a line in that colour. The file that keeps them apart is called piers.txt, and it is the most useful thing I made all year.

  • North is where the big crane is, not where the compass says
  • Crossing times are drawn as distance, so a slow boat looks far
  • The cafe that sells tickets is marked twice, on purpose

What stayed off

Depths, buoys and anything a sailor needs. This is a map for people with ice cream, and it says so in the corner.

Want one of your place?

A map like this takes four to six weeks and starts with a walk.
