The handbook for 3.2

Forty-six of sixty-two shape pages are rewritten for the new version. The rest still describe 3.1 and say so at the top.

Guide

Five short pages. Read them in order once, then never again.

Start

A poster is a short list: name a ground, list the shapes that lie on it and say where the words go. The kit draws the rest.

Install

Copy kit.css next to your own stylesheet and load it first. Nothing else is needed: the kit has no script and asks for no build step. Then describe a first poster:

posterground: dots
shapes:
  - disc, large, across the seam
  - squiggle, tilted
words: on a flat block
New in 3.2

A shape now takes its size from the ground it lies on, so one class fits a poster and a phone.

Draw a first poster

Three moves make a poster, and the order matters less than doing all three.

  • Lay a pattern over a third of the sheet, edge to edge
  • Put one large filled shape across the seam
  • Set the words on a flat block, never on the pattern

Then break one rule

A poster that follows every page of this handbook is correct and a little dull. Pick one rule, break it once and leave the rest alone. The usual choice is the clashing pairtwo fills that sit side by side on purpose.

Every shape in the kit, its class and the sizes it comes in.

Nothing is deprecated

Version 3.2 retires no shape. Old names keep working until 4.0.

Ask

A question, or a mistake you found. Both end up as a better page.

Asked often

May text sit on a pattern?

On the quiet page pattern, yes. On every loud one, put a flat block under the words first.

How many colours on one poster?

The four fills, the ink and the ground. A fifth colour is for one small shape.

Why is there no shadow class?

Nothing in the kit casts one. Let a block overlap its neighbour instead.

Can I use the kit in print?

Yes. Every pattern is drawn from two flat colours, so it separates cleanly.
