  3. The echo tunnel

The echo tunnel

Forty metres of pipe, wide enough to crawl through. Floor 1, from four years.

Shout in, and wait

Your voice goes down the pipe, hits the far wall and walks back. It takes about a quarter of a second, which is long enough to be surprised.

What to try

Clap once and count the claps that come back. Then whisper: the tunnel carries a whisper further than a shout. The sign at the entrance, 40 m, is the length your voice travels each way.

  • One clap, and listen for three
  • Two friends, one at each end
  • A drum, if Rosa has left it out

Why it works

Sound is a push that travels through air. A hard wall pushes back. A soft one, such as the curtain halfway down, swallows it.

Loud Hands-on Floor 1 Open Queue, 10 min Closed at 16
