Why the first coat is always grey New

Process, a four minute read.

Written by

She does the drawing and most of the ladder work.

About the workshop

The ground comes first

Before any colour goes on, the whole board gets one thin coat of mid grey. It looks like a wasted morning and it saves the afternoon.

On white, a pencil line and a brush line look alike. On grey, the layoutThe letters drawn on the board in pencil before any paint goes on. stands out in graphite and every wobble in the first stroke shows as a lighter edge.

What it shows

  • Letters that lean, before they are filled
  • Spacing that closes up when the colour goes on
  • Brush marks that would telegraph through enamel

Mixing it

We keep the recipe on the tin as 3 white : 1 black : a little umber so that either of us can make it without asking.
