14+15 May 2015 The old customs hall, by the river

Fourth edition

Two days on type and interface

chronoskin is a small conference for people who draw letters and people who build screens. One room, eighteen talks, no parallel tracks.

Everyone sits in the same hall and hears the same talks, so the conversation at lunch is about the same things. That is the whole format.

Tomas Okafor. Thursday 14 May, 10:15, main hall.

What the talk is about

Most of what people read on a screen is numbers: prices, times, counts. Hardly any typeface is drawn with them first.

The talk walks through one family of figures from sketch to release and shows where lining, old-style and tabular forms each earn their place in an interface.

What you will take home

  • When a column of figures needs tabular forms and when it does not
  • How to check a face for figures before you license it
  • A short list of open families that get it right

For people who write CSS

One declaration does most of the work: font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums. The second half of the talk is about the cases it misses.
