How do I move my library to a new laptop?

Asked today at 9:12 by Tavish Lorne. 3 answers, 148 views.

Moving everything across

The old laptop is on its last legs and the new one arrived this morning. I have about 9,000 photos and four years of music in chronoskin Sync and would rather not upload it all again.

What I have tried

I installed version 3.2 on the new machine and signed in. It shows an empty library and offers to start a first sync, which the status window says will take two days.

  • Both laptops are on the same home network.
  • The old one still starts, slowly.

The setting I am unsure about

There is a box called use existing folder in the first window. Is that the one I want?

Accepted answer

Yes, that box is the one. Copy the whole Library folder from the old laptop to the new one over the network or on a memory card, put it where you want it to live, then tick the box and point it at the copy. The program compares instead of uploading, and that takes minutes.

One thing to add: sign out on the old laptop before you give it away, or it keeps counting as one of your devices.
