Harbour bridge to reopen a month early
The harbour bridge will carry traffic again from Monday, four weeks sooner than planned, after engineers finished replacing the deck during a run of dry weather. Buses cross first; cars and lorries follow on 31 March.
What changes on Monday
Routes 4, 11 and 19 return to their usual stops on both banks. The temporary shuttle from Quay Street ends on Sunday night, and the footbridge stays open as before.
- Buses only from Monday 24 March
- All traffic from Monday 31 March
- A limit of 20 miles an hour until the summer
Why it took less time
The old deck came away in larger sections than expected, the council said, which saved nineteen working days. Readers can follow the remaining work under the tag harbour-bridge.
What is still to do
- Lighting on the north approach
- Repainting the railings, one side at a time
