Rooting a cutting in water, start to finish

Nearly every swap on this board starts with a stem in a glass. This is the whole method, with the two places where it goes wrong.

Cut below a node

A node is the small bump where a leaf meets the stem. Roots come from there and from nowhere else. Label the glass with the name and the day, like pothos 04-03, because in three weeks you will not remember.

What you need

  • A clean pair of scissors.
  • A glass that lets you see the roots.
  • Tap water that has stood for a day.

When to pot it

When the roots are as long as your thumb. Longer roots sulk in soil. If the stem goes soft instead, read what to do with mush or ask in a topic of your own.

Mine has sat in the glass for five weeks and has one root the length of a grain of rice. The window faces north. Is that the reason, or is it the water?

It is the window. Move the glass to the brightest sill you have, out of direct sun, and change the water twice a week. North light roots a pothos in two months, east light in three weeks.
