What the mast is for

It carries four instruments, one aerial and the only lamp for ninety kilometres.

Ice grows on the stays at about a centimetre a day. Left alone, it would bring the mast down in a month, so every third day somebody goes up with a wooden mallet and a line.

How this chapter was filmed

One camera stayed on the ground and one went up in a chest harness. The climb is shown at full length; the log entry for the day reads M3 cleared 11:40.

In this chapter

  • The climb, in one take of nine minutes
  • The halo round the lamp in ice fog
  • The first radio call of the winter
