A sun the size of a coin

Painted in forty minutes, standing in the water, before the light had a colour.

The horizon is drawn with the edge of a knife. Everything above it was laid in one wet layer and never touched again.

Where to stand

Two metres back, a little to the left. The catalogue number is Cat. 01; the audio guide begins here.

Look for

  • The pencil line still showing under the sea
  • A thumbprint in the lower right corner
  • The date scratched into wet paint
Condition

Cleaned in 2019. The varnish is original and has yellowed a little at the edges.

Where it has hung

Four exhibitions since 1962, the last of them eleven years ago.

Reproductions

A print at full size is sold in the shop on the ground floor.
