chronoskin

14 + 15 September 2018

Friday 14 and Saturday 15 September 2018, the old print works

Two days on pages that are only pages.

chronoskin is a small conference for people who build for the web and suspect it needs less. Fourteen talks, two workshops, one room with good chairs, and nothing on a screen that a browser could not draw by itself.

  • 2 days
  • 14 talks
  • 180 seats
  • 45 still free

135 of 180 seats taken registration closes 1 September

Tables were fine

Friday, 13:15 to 13:45, the hall. full

rsr. satotimetable maker, third year at chronoskin

For ten years we were told not to use tables, and for ten years the bus timetable was a picture of a table. This talk is about the element that was made for rows and columns, what it still does better than anything built since, and the three things it never learned.

What you will see

One timetable, four hundred rows, set three ways: as a table, as a grid, and as a list that pretends. We will time each on a five-year-old phone and read each aloud with a screen reader.

Bring

  • A timetable you dislike.
  • A browser with its inspector open on display: table-cell.

Your programme

The room is full. Holding a place here keeps your seat; letting it go gives it to the first name on the list at the door.

Practical

Where it is, what to bring, how we behave.

The old print works, by the canal

The hall is the press room of a newspaper that stopped printing in 1994. It is ten minutes on foot from the station: leave by the north door, follow the canal with the water on your left, and stop at the brick chimney.

What to bring

A laptop only if you are in a workshop. Paper is provided. The network is slow on purpose and its name is plain.

House rules

  • Speakers show pages, not slides of pages.
  • Questions are questions.
  • Nobody is photographed without being asked first.

If something goes wrong, find anyone with a green sticker.

Asked every year

Is there somewhere to stay?

Two guest houses hold rooms for us until 1 August. Say the name of the conference when you write to them.

Can I give my ticket to someone else?

Yes. Tell us the new name by the Wednesday before, so the sticker is right.

Will the talks be recorded?

Sound only, and only where the speaker agrees. The files go up as plain links a month later.
