How a project runs
The same four steps?A wordmark takes six weeks, a text face about six months., whatever the size.
- A twenty minute call and a written brief
- Three directions on paper within two weeks
- One direction drawn out and tested in use
- Files, a short guide and a month of support
What does a first call cost?
Nothing. Twenty minutes, and you leave with a rough plan either way.
Who owns the drawings?
You do, once the last invoice is paid. The sketches stay in the studio.
Halden Grotesk
A text face in six weights, drawn for a regional newspaper that wanted to sound like itself again.

A voice for the morning paper
The paper had used the same borrowed grotesque since 1994. It was tidy and it was nobody's in particular, which is a problem for a paper named after its town.
Starting from the masthead
The old masthead had a square g and a flat-topped t. Both stayed, and the rest of the alphabet was drawn to keep them company. The first proofs were set at 8.5 point, the size of the body text.
What had to hold
- Six columns at 8.5 point on thin newsprint
- Headlines that fit one more word than before
- Figures that line up in the tide tables
Into use
The family went to print in February. The italic follows this autumn; you can ask for a trial in the meantime.
Elsewhere
A link as it looks new, visited, under the pointer and pressed.
Hours by stage
Twenty-six weeks, most of them spent on spacing.
